Welcome!
I’m Cara, a writer, teacher, and photography historian. By day, I’m a book coach, college professor, and creative writer and by night I’m . . . also a book coach, college professor, and creative writer.
Sorry, no big super-hero secrets here.
What I do have is a love of all things related to the writing process. And a deep curiosity about how to build a writing life that serves our whole and inevitably messy human selves. Since the early 2000s, I’ve designed and led workshops, seminars, and retreats that help writers embrace their creative side and build processes and practices that work for them. Most recently, I’ve built a side hustle as a book coach and I have loved every minute of it. That’s why I decided to start this newsletter: to share ideas about writing with my current and former coaching clients. And, by extension, any other writer people who might be interested in what I have to share. Like you!
Why “Finnegan’s Take”?
My dad once had a fishing boat named Finnegan’s Wake. Clever, right? When your name is Finnegan, some plays on words are just irresistible. And of course a literary reference is always appropriate for a newsletter about writing and writers. (Why I never thought of this title when I launched my first blog in 2006 is anyone’s guess. I mean, it was RIGHT THERE! Embarrassing oversight.)
I’ll use this space to offer my take on a whole range of things related to creative writing, from fiction to research-intensive non-fiction to memoir. You can expect me to reflect on the writing process, explore common struggles we all face as writers, and share advice and resources you can put to immediate use in your own writing life. I’ll also talk a little bit about the fiction and non-fiction projects I’m currently working on.
When and how will you get it?
